You know it has been a long since you've done a podcast when you have to go back to your own site to find out the next episode number. This is episode 69 of the Live Music Podcast. Welcome back everyone and I'm glad you are joining me once again after so long. It would be rude to not at least acknowledge the extended absence from the podcast world so lets go over that real quick. If I had to pick one reason that I stopped and I'm sure this is true for any others who have pod faded is just a lack of time and energy to put into it. This was compounded by some health issues that have since been put to bed and ultimately I just wasn't listening to as much live music recordings as I was did. Sure there were a few occasionally that I would jot down for a potential future episode but nothing much came of those. I also thought that if I did come back I could cut out a lot of the extra monotonous work that really wasn't all that necessary. So why am I back now. Really it was just a what the hell I'm going to do a podcast moment. Unfortunately this does not mean that I will be returning to regularly producing podcasts again like in the old days. I just have too many other commitments that take precedence over this and in all likelihood it may be a 2-3 episodes a year kind of thing which is much more than I was doing. There are at least a few new artists that I have my eye on podcasting, Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers definitely comes to mind. As far as these other commitments a big part of that is starting a recipe and health blog at slowcarbchef.com. Switching to the the Slow Carb diet was an enormous part of getting me out of my health funk and in that process I became very passionate about eat healthy and cooking. So please check that out if you are interested. In closing I want to thank you for understanding on the abrupt stoppage without explanation. I got a few messages curious about if there were going to be new episodes but nothing negative so I appreciate that. The music for this episode features a band that I have listened to more and more since the last podcast and although I don't usually like to pick favorites if you pressed I would have to say they currently are at the top of the list for me. This concert was recorded at the Firefly Festival in Dover, Delaware on July 22nd, 2012. I hope you like it and please tell your friends to listen as I'm sure a lot of my original subscribers are long gone. Special thanks goes out to the taper for making this show available and please support the Black Keys by purchasing albums and concert tickets. Looking forward to the next time friends, thanks for tuning in. The Black Keys - Dover, Delaware - 7/22/12

Welcome back, don’t call it a comeback, to the live music podcast episode 68. It has been quite some time since the last show and without going into too many details it was a break that was needed but it is good to be back. After such a long time is was going to take a very special concert to get me going again and I think that is what I have in store for you on this show. Ideally this show would have came out sooner so everyone could have listened to it on St Paddys Day, but a busy weekend followed by a Hendrix Tribute concert caused a slight delay in production. The timing for it, however, brings up a great lesson that its ok to enjoy Irish music the other 364 days of the year. Its kind of the same way one would continue to drink Guinness after St Paddys Day due to it being a very fine beverage. Well, this compilation showcases another fine Irish export, their music and musicians. 4) Black Velvet Road - Josh Ritter - 2004-03-25

When I began this year’s podcasts with Episode 58 I mentioned having a stock pile of amazing shows to kick the year off with. Well this one definitely falls into that category. This episode features an audience recording that is truly a classic and also a first on my podcast featuring the artist known as the Boss. Back on November 19, 1984, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band rolled into Kansas City to perform a 3+ hour marathon of a concert in a building filled with thousands of screaming fans. The sound quality and song selection made this recording an easy pick, especially after hearing Bruce mention Ames, IA during his epic finale. Of course Ames is home of the Iowa State Cyclones which is my alma mater. As you can imagine it was very difficult to whittle 3 hrs down to just 1 but hopefully I did a decent enough job getting a sampling of the wide range of songs. I strongly encourage you to download the entire show in order to get the full experience. One highlight of the show that I didn’t include was about 20 minutes from the end of the set Bruce pauses for a moment just to announce that he got his second wind and goes right into a cover of “Twist and Shout” mixed in with “Do You Love Me?”. Listening to this concert, Bruce’s love for performing music is palpable and he truly earns his nickname of the Boss. That band of his can kick some butt too. Well here it is, I give to you Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band! Take the Live Music Podcast listener survey here!

Podcast #60: Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds (w/ Bob Weir and Carlos Santana) - San Rafael, CA - 3/14/99
I want to start the show by wishing everyone an early Happy Valentine’s Day or a late one depending on when you download this. Also I’d like to let my listeners know that I have noticed less downloads of the App bonus content than I would have expected. If you have purchased the App and need help accessing the bonus section please email me at livemusicpodcast@gmail.com. Thanks again for your downloads and support. This past Tuesday was the release of the new Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds concert album “Live In Las Vegas”. This album includes the music from night three of Dave & Tim’s Las Vegas trilogy last December and I highly recommend picking up a copy of it. Partly due to this release, I thought the timing was perfect to finally podcast what I consider to be the finest live acoustic set ever captured by a taper. I played a Dave & Tim recording on the very first episode of this podcast and you don’t know how close I was to using this one instead of the 2006 Vegas show. Picking a Dave & Tim recording is extremely difficult because there are so many flat out amazing ones in circulation. So you might be asking yourself what makes this one so special. Audio quality is pretty much a given so lets just skip that. Next up is a passionate performance and excellent song selection…check and check. Finally you need something extra unique to make it stand out from the rest. Do special guests the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir and Carlos frickin’ Santana do it for you? I’d wager most of you will be in the hell ya category. Just a quick note before I get into it; you might notice a lot more space between the songs than I normally leave. This was done intentionally to highlight the often hilarious banter that comes out of Dave’s mouth, lovingly referred to as ‘Dave Speak’. Please enjoy Dave, Tim, and their guests from the March 14, 1999 performance in San Rafael, California. Take the Live Music Podcast listener survey here!

Very quickly I would like to thank everyone that has download the Live Music Podcast App and shown your support for this podcast. I hope you are very happy with your new purchase and I look forward to bringing you more quality live music to play through it.
Well here it finally is, the podcast I have been hyping up for a full week on my site. Hopefully you will agree that it was well deserving of that. When I heard the news last spring that Jack White would not be touring with The Raconteurs in the coming year I was deeply confused and disappointed as a huge fan of theirs. I was also a little skeptical of the new band he had formed with him moving from guitar to drums and leaving the majority of the singing duties to Alison Mosshart of The Kills. Well that feeling of worry evaporated very quickly with my first listen of their debut album Horehound and having heard and seen some of their live performances I have now fallen madly in love with the new sound. At this point I will follow Jack White to a polka band if need be, because he has an incredible knack for surrounding himself with immensely talented musicians. Without further adieu I present to you from their November 17, 2009 concert in Brooklyn, NY, The Dead Weather. Take the Live Music Podcast listener survey here! This is the first podcast of 2010 so I want to kick it off by wishing everyone a very Happy New Year. I’ve got a ton of great music lined up to get this year started off right so I hope you will continue listening. Just one quick announcement before I get into the music portion, I made a false statement in the last podcast when I was introducing the new Live Music Podcast App. I had assumed that the Itunes store used the same system for gifting apps as it does for music but apparently that is not the case. For now it looks like the only way to give an app to a friend is to email a gift card through the store. Unfortunately they are only sold in $10 increments so your friend will have to find another way to spend the eight dollars and one cent that they have left over. If you need a suggestion you might mention all of the great Itunes links that are found at livemusicpodcast.net.
Well the music I have for this show is Dan Auerbach and The Fast Five’s August 9th stop at last year’s Lollapalooza. This tour was in support of Dan Auerbach’s solo release Keep It Hid but you may recognize Dan’s voice from his other band, The Black Keys. I’m not totally sure why Dan and drummer Patrick Carney decided to spend some time apart for this album/tour but Black Keys fans need not worry. They have already been back in the studio to record the rap rock collaboration project Blakroc which came out last November and are also working on a new album which will be released in the spring. Similar to Dan, The Fast Five also have an alter ego outside of this gig and are more widely known as the San Antonio based group Hacienda. Take the Live Music Podcast listener survey here! To start the show I’ve got some very exciting news to share with you on the Live Music Podcast front. Last week I was informed from my host site that the iPhone app they have been developing for me was accepted. The new app makes listening to this podcast on your iPhone or iPod Touch easier than ever before. On top of that, starting on this episode I will be releasing bonus content that you can only get by using the app. I do apologize to the non iPhone owners out there, which includes myself, but I will make sure to include links on the site where you can find bonus content.
Due to the timing of this episode release you may not hear it before Christmas but if you do and are looking for a last minute gift for the iPhone owner in your life please consider giving the app. Its only $1.99 and The music for this show continues a tradition on this podcast by featuring a concert from Warren Haynes’ Annual Christmas Jam. This year I am playing select tracks from the Christmas Jam Band’s performance on December 12th. This was quite a show even by the very high standards that this event brings. It features a little bit of everything from Aerosmith and the Rolling Stones to Collective Soul and Bob Dylan. So please enjoy the 2009 Christmas Jam Band. If you follow music blogs like I do you may have read a story last month about the tragic accidental death of !!! (Chk Chk Chk) drummer Jerry Fuchs. My sympathies especially go to those closest to him but also to any fans of the band. I don’t have much of an intro this time so we’ll get right to the goods. The concert I am featuring is yet another from the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, this time featuring the Beastie Boys. While I’m definitely more of a rock fan than hip hop I still enjoy a good Beastie tune every now and then. They also have a slightly more rock sound than usual playing live so hopefully if you despise hip hop you will at least give this a chance. Mix Master Mike even samples a couple of Zeppelin tunes for ya.

I’m sure by now most people have found one or two albums from the year that have found their way on repeat more than the rest. Even though the year is far from over its pretty safe to say that I have declared my winners. The first album that really stood out for me was The Dead Weather’s debut ‘Horehound’. Although I was first disappointed to hear that the Raconteurs wouldn’t be touring again. Jack White’s new project did not disappoint and easily swooped in to fill the void. This album is rock solid all the way through and, yes, I am working on finding a concert to podcast.
The second album I picked up just recently and first came into my radar on the Austin City Limits free sampler that I blogged about in my Big Ass Austin City Limits post. This short exposure to Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears was quickly followed up by reading about their performance from the festival, in of all places, a blog on ESPN. If you are into music, basketball or just like reading witty musings check out Paul Shirley’s blog on ESPN’s The Life, where I read his first hand account of the festival. I used to watch Paul play forward for the Iowa State Cyclones, but I think even non alums can appreciate his entertaining articles. I do feel slightly bad for the people trying to watch the festival from behind him. The music for this episode comes from a concert that Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears played in Charlotte, North Carolina on June 15th earlier this year. If you like the music of James Brown its almost a sure bet that you will dig these guys. The sound quality of this recording is a tad gritty compared to some of the other shows I’ve posted but seems to fit the type of gritty soul music that this band plays. I first want to thank everyone who has become a Facebook Fan of the Live Music Podcast. Becoming a fan is a small way that you can show your support of the site and also find out who else is listening. If you are not a fan yet and would like to become one check out the Facebook gadget on the right side of the homepage, its pretty hard to miss. Another new way that everyone can show your support is by filling out a quick survey. This survey will be used by my hosting site to determine potential advertisers and literally takes less than 1 minute to complete. I need a minimum of 250 responses to be counted so thanks in advance for your help on this.
The musical talent for this show is truly one of the great ones. I say that about a lot of bands but for this one there are almost 20 years of consistently great music and millions of sold concert tickets and albums to back me up. They also have a new album out so it was pretty hard not to pick Pearl Jam for this episodes featured band. These natives of Seattle were in especially pure form the day of June 14th 2008 in Manchester, TN. This was of course the 7th installment of the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival and this taping really capture all of the excellence that a Pearl Jam concert can be. Even the sound quality of this recording is superb and the crowd noise to a minimum. I’m not even sure how this was possible since clearly from the amount of crowd singing on songs like Better Man they were picked up on the mics perfectly. Eddie Vedder was even impressed with the singing ability of the crowd to stop for a moment and acknowledge them. I thought he might even pull out the “pretty good singing there” quote. To start off this show I want to make a quick announcement that the LMP has finally joined the social network bandwagon. The website now features Facebook and Twitter gadgets down the right side of the page. Please consider becoming a Facebook fan or following LMP tweets on Twitter. I especially encourage joining the fan page because it is a great place to meet other listeners, comment on past episodes, and make recommendations for new ones.
Now moving on to the music for this episode and the featured artist Alejandro Escovedo. If Bruce Springsteen and Los Lobos had a child it would probably sound very similar to Escovedo. He brings a lot of passion to his shows and you will find that out on this recording from June 10th, 2009 at the Pageant in St Louis. If the first track sounds familiar it might be because I featured a cover of it by Backyard Tire Fire on Episode 48. Now I present to you, Alejandro Escovedo! The artist for this show is another great musician that I’ve been trying to feature for some time. If this is your first exposure to Donavon Frankenreiter he is a singer/song writer who’s bio reads a lot like Jack Johnson…both professional surfers turned musicians. Not surprisingly the two are long time friends and Donavon’s debut album was even released on Jack’s Brushfire Records. While this first album had more of a laid back acoustic feel similar to Jack, his albums since have stood apart and even mixed in some 70s inspired funk. The concert I will be playing was recorded at the Greenfield Lake Ampitheater in Wilmington, North Carolina. Here he is, the man, the myth, the mustache…

With this show I am celebrating the 50th episode with a band that I have been dying to feature for quite some time. I have not seen many recordings of Kings of Leon on the net, but the quality of this recording made it a shoo-in for this milestone podcast. I’m guessing most listeners of this podcast have heard of Kings of Leon by now as their mainstream exposure has sharply increased within the last year. It is only on their current tour that they have been headlining larger venues in the US, while they have been playing in front of huge audiences in the UK for the past several years. A strange fact when you consider their hometown of Nashville, TN. It was probably inevitable that their days of smaller venues wouldn’t last, so feel very lucky if you got to see them. I think you will agree that they were destined for the big stage after hearing this recording of their June 27th, 2009 concert in the 17,000 capacity O2 World arena in Berlin.
If you enjoyed this podcast click the following link to download the full concert. Kings of Leon - Berlin, Germany - 6/27/09 The source for this show is only available in FLAC format so if would like to convert it to MP3 for your Ipod or other portable media player I recommend downloading a free program I developed called the Ultimate Live Music Audio Converter. In the blog posts leading up to this episode I hinted that the music for this show would feature a concert from this year’s Bonnaroo. With many downloads to choose from I ended up deciding on a very impressive recording of Wilco’s set from the third night. This was Wilco’s third time playing at the music festival Mecca in Tennessee and left no doubt why they keep getting invited back.

This show features a band that I’ve been listening to quite a bit lately called Backyard Tire Fire. This hardworking Midwestern rock and roll band plays honest music for the everyman, as you might expect with a name like Backyard Tire Fire. I was able to see these guys open for Grace Potter last November and despite the annoyance of the fire alarm going off several times, they put on an awesome performance. Fortunately the concert I have for you does not have any alarms. With so many great recordings on archive.org it was tough picking out just one, but special thanks go out to the band’s manager for kindly directing me to this one.

Last month I received an email from a listener asking if I would do a show to mark the 15 anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death. Although the actual anniversary has since passed by, I thought it was a great idea and especially wanted to do this because of Nirvana’s influence on me during my earlier years.
I looked around for some quality sounding live shows without much luck but not surprisingly there are a great many bands that cover Nirvana songs. I thought it would be fitting to put together a compilation of those covers recognizing the lasting impact that Kurt Cobain and Nirvana has had on rock music. Some of these are from well-knowns like Gov’t Mule and Disco Biscuits, but also included are several less established bands but equally inspired covers. I want to take a minute from normal broadcasting to welcome back Justin from his short hiatus on livemusicblog.com. Those familiar to it will be glad to know that his jam friendly site is back with concert and festival updates, band news, and everything else related to live music. Just in time for the prime concert season. Also of interest one of the recent postings announced the creation of a new site, livemusicworkouts.com, started by LMB contributor Whit Person. As the name suggests this site features high energy live music sets to get your workout moving. It’s a great idea considering most people don’t usually consider live music recordings when they put together a workout mix.
Now back to our regularly scheduled broadcast, already in progress. For this show I am featuring a recent concert by Idaho born singer songwriter Josh Ritter. I owe my friend Susie, who very well might be his biggest fan, for introducing me to his music. The last time I saw her she burned a mix of his songs and I’m hoping on this episode I will have returned the favor. With St Paddy’s day just around the corner I thought it would be fitting to feature a concert with some Irish heritage. With that in mind you’d be hard pressed to find a concert any more suited than U2 in their hometown of Dublin. Combine that with the release of their new album, “No Line on the Horizon”, and this pick was a no-brainer.
The recording I will be playing was made during the On the Eleventh Hour tour, December 30th, 1989. Besides having impeccable sound quality it also includes special guest B.B. King towards the end of the show and is easily one of the best recordings you will find on U2Torrents.com. The music for this episode comes from the ocean cruise/music festival known as Jam Cruise. Since the maiden voyage in 2004, Jam Cruise has been bringing jam band artists together with their fans for several days out in the Caribbean. I’ve never been able to make it but perhaps they’ll give me a free pass next year for giving them the free publicity. Fortunately they do allow tapers to bring their equipment and the show I have for you comes from something that they call the Jam Room. This is basically like the Bonnaroo Superjam where artists from diverse bands can come together to have an anything goes jam session. The night I have for you includes Ivan Neville on keys, Scott Metzger from Particle on guitar, and Les Claypool on drums among the many other talented musicians. Prepare to enter the Jam Room.

The recording for this show comes from one of my all time favorite live performers and the only reason it took this long to get a show posted was the relatively small number of recordings available. Every once in a while I will spot a decent Ben Folds recording on the inter-webs, but this one from a 2008 tour stop in San Francisco was a cut above the rest.
There is a clear reason why Ben Folds’ live reputation has achieved such a legendary status. First and foremost the man is a natural performer and really knows how to work a crowd. Another reason in my mind is what he describes during this recording as his set list strategy. Basically this means playing his new songs at the beginning of the set and then finishing with classic fan favorites. To me this formula is a perfect 1-2 punch that I believe all artists should use for optimal crowd enjoyment. I tried to follow Ben’s lead for the song selection so I hope you’ll agree with my assessment. Song listing

I was inspired to do an inauguration theme for this show mostly due to the monumentally historic event that occurred earlier this week. However, I was also inspired in small part by another inauguration podcast I had just listened to from This American Life. As usual that episode was superbly done and a great one to get you started if you have never heard the show before. After listening to a few of them there is a very good chance you will get hooked on it like I have been for the last 6 months.
For my inauguration show I’ve got some great politically themed live music in store for you. For those familiar with the Live Music Blog you might recognize the music from their podcast episode 62, which I helped put together. After a long and excellent run the Live Music Blog is currently on an indefinite hiatus so I wanted to repost the music from that show and this week seemed like a good opportunity for that. So please sit back and enjoy my 2009 Inauguration Compilation. Song listing

This is the first show since the holidays so I hope you found some time to relax and enjoy time with friends and family during the break. I stayed pretty busy myself with a pair of family get-togethers over Christmas and recently returned from a trip to Dubai, which explains the delay in getting this episode out.
Dubai was a pretty amazing place with incredible buildings around every corner, delicious cuisine, and even indoor snow skiing. What really amazed me was despite how far away it was just how similar city life was to the States and relatively easy it was to acclimate. Well other than the cost of everything that is. Not to say that it was all the same, one big difference that I found was the absolute power that their government has over businesses there. During my stay all live music was prohibited in public on multiple occasions by order of the Shaikh. So from a live music perspective it might not be the ideal place to go, but if you are planning on seeing a concert there my advice would be to have a backup plan. Moving on to the music portion for the episode. For this show I am featuring Blitzen Trapper from their November 22, 2008 performance in Birmingham, Alabama. A co-worker told me about this band a while back and I found this recording shortly after. They have a slightly Dylanesque sound in my opinon but, as Levar Burton might say, you don't have to take my word for it. Give them a listen and decide for yourself, I hope you enjoy. Song listing

Earlier in the week I had planned to go with a different concert for this episode but it seems that Santa had an early present for me. Last year around this time I featured Warren Haynes’ 19th Annual X-Mas Jam and I decided to continue the tradition when I came across multiple concerts from the 20th X-Mas Jam. The lineups are always so good that I might have to make this a yearly tradition.
The music for this show will feature a new band with a familiar lead singer. During the Beastie Boys recent “Get Out and Vote” tour, Ben Harper debuted a new lineup, Relentless 7. The beginnings of the band’s formation date back to 1998 at a concert Ben played in Austin. While on the way to the show, the guy driving Ben’s van asked to play a demo tape. Ben was so impressed that he got the band a record deal and continued to work with their guitarist on several projects, including one of the tracks on Both Sides of the Gun. The band was Wan Santo Condo and guitar player Jason Mozersky, is now playing lead for Relentless 7. This concert begins with a track called “Number With No Name,” which is from their debut album, White Lies For Dark Times, which will be out in May of next year. The limited tour stops they have made so far have been at smaller venues than typical for the Innocent Criminals. The reason for this can be attributed to the following quote from Ben Harper: “I wanted us to earn it, this is where it needs to be for it to be sincere”. I for one am hoping they stick with this philosophy on their album tour next Spring, just be sure to get your tickets early. Song listing

Well it’s that time of year in Kansas City as I’m sure it is in many other areas where you are listening when the inevitability of winter starts sinking in. With the majority of my outdoor activities coming to an end for the next several months the thoughts of spending the majority of my time indoors has put a slight damper on my mood. So in light of this I thought it would be fitting to do a blues show for this episode. Also, it has been a while since I featured a recording from my hometown and this recent download I came across fit both of those criteria perfectly.
Last month wrapped up the end of Gov’t Mule’s Kinder Revolution Fall Tour and supporting them on this tour was a great blues band called Back Door Slam. The trio comes all the way from the Isle of Man which is at the geographical centre of the British Isles. Despite that they seem to spend a lot of time touring the US because I saw them open for Rusted Root about a year before at the same venue. They really are a great opening act and I’d love to see what they can do with a full set sometime. This recording was captured by Nick Hatfield aka MOMule on November 16th, 2008 and is sure to get you fired up on even the coldest winter day. For this episode I am featuring an Australian artist that was last seen touring the US with Ben Folds. If you guessed Missy Higgins then I guess you win although I didn’t really come up with any prizes.
I got the chance to see their sold out stop in Kansas City last month and despite waiting in line during a cold and rainy night for about a half an hour, it turned out to be one of my favorite concerts this year. I can be fairly cheap so when I get to see 2 great bands in the same night it kind of feels like I got a little extra for my money.
The job of the opening band can be quite difficult with many crowds and especially with one that is cold and wet. Typically half of the people show up in time for the opener and half of those are trying to talk to each other during the songs. An opener really has to do something special to excite a crowd in this kind of environment and for the audience in attendance at the Uptown Theater, Missy Higgins was absolutely captivating. Her expressive and slightly sassy style was a great complement to Ben Folds and perfect for a small theater like the Uptown. A good indicator of how well an opener is doing is the difference between the crowd noise during the songs and in between. Let’s just say that a lot of headliners would be jealous of the loud applause after and near silence during each song. Try as I might, I was not able to find a recording of that night’s performance. I did however find an excellent recording of a concert that was taped about a year before in Hollywood, California. After what seems like an eternity the 2008 election came to conclusion this week. I know I stayed non-partisan in my previous postings but I’m going to break away from that for a moment and tell you that I am absolutely thrilled to have Barack Obama as my next president.
So with the election out of the way I don’t have much else to talk about at the moment so I’m going to get back to focusing a little more strictly on the music. For this show I have for you 13 songs from The Black Keys’ May 13th, 2008 concert in Washington, D.C. I actually hadn’t intended to make a political connection for this show but I guess it must have slipped in subconsciously because this was the concert I picked out among the several that I downloaded. I’ve only been listening to the Black Keys fairly recently and have never seen them live, but this recording really blew me away. In fact until researching for this show I wasn’t even aware that there were only two members in the band. Despite having only two members they are able to create a live show that is more powerful than most bands twice their size. Now I present to you the Black Keys…. The past two episodes I have started the show off with a message to encourage you to vote. So it’ll come as no surprise then that with less than 2 weeks before one of the most important elections in US history that is exactly how I will begin this one. I will continue to stay non-partisan so I’ve included links to both candidates websites where you can read more about their stances on key issues which hopefully will be how you are making your decision this November 4th.
http://www.barackobama.com/issues/ http://www.johnmccain.com/Informing/Issues/ Another good resource is factcheck.org which is a great website that monitors the factual accuracy of statements made by the candidates and their campaigns. Please check it out before taking those attack ads on TV at face value. For this episode’s music I am featuring a Canadian band that was recorded in 2005 and isn’t currently touring so you might not think there is a political connection. In fact I downloaded this concert while searching for political songs for my last episode. In search of anything Bruce Springsteen, I came across a concert by the Arcade Fire playing a cover of his song “State Trooper”. It is the eighth track on the set list in case you are listening for it. My apologies go out to those listeners that are getting sick of this political stuff and I thank you for staying with me. Hello everyone and welcome to the Live Music Podcast episode 35. If you are joining us from the Live Music Blog then let me welcome you back for Part 2 of Keep on Votin’ in the Free World. If not make sure you check out Part 1.
If you haven’t guessed it yet, the theme for this episode is registering new voters. Voter registration deadlines are fastly approaching in many states, with October 4th being the first, so there is no time to waste if you aren’t yet registered. Even if you are not planning on voting it is still a very good idea to register in case you make the decision to vote when it’s too late. There really aren’t any downsides to registering…it’s fast and requires very little effort. A great place to start the process is by going to non-partisan websites Rockthevote.com or HeadCount.org to begin the registration process or to check the voter registration deadlines in your state. Part 2 of Keep on Votin’ in the Free World takes place where Part 1 left off with more great sounding audience recordings featuring politically charged music. Once again all music was downloaded via archive.org and bt.etree.org for artists with open taping policies. Thanks again to the bands for allowing these recordings and to the tapers that made them. Please enjoy part 2 and if you still need to register do it today! If you are living in the US it’s pretty hard not to get sucked into all things political right now and if you were hoping for an escape from it in this podcast you will be sorely disappointed. As Bono has shown us music and politics go hand in hand and although the LMP doesn’t officially support a candidate we do think voting is important enough to be featured on a LMP PSA.
The voter registration deadlines are fastly approaching in many states, including my home state of Missouri where the last day to register is October 8th. Even if you haven’t made up your mind on who to vote for or even whether or not you will vote, the LMP strongly encourages you to register anyways in case you make up your mind when it’s too late. It only takes about 3 minutes and can even be completed online by going to either voteforchange.com or johnmccain.com. One contest that does not require expensive ad campaigns and complicated polling is for the title of Greatest Band in the World. This episode features music from the one band that experts and fans can all agree on. I’m speaking, of course, about Tenacious D. The dynamic duo of Kyle Gass and Jack Black take rocking to a whole new level and have even been known to rock a face clean off. If you are offended by crude language or humor of any kind please look elsewhere. For all others please enjoy Tenacious D from their January 22, 2002 stop at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City. Ladies and gentlemen it’s time once again time for a Live Music Podcast public service announcement or LMP PSA for short. After many years of listening to audience tapings I have found an easy way to increase the listening pleasure for recordings with less than perfect audio quality. Simply switch out your speakers for headphones. I can’t give you an explanation of the physics to why they sound better through headphones, but next time you are ready to throw out a sub par recording try out this tip before you do so.
Here at the Live Music Podcast I do my best to bring you only the best sounding recordings but even a good recording is usually improved through headphones. For this episode especially, low quality shouldn’t be an issue since the recording I have comes straight from the soundboard. Matt Costa is pretty much what you’d expect from the same record label as Jack Johnson and G Love and Special Sauce. Of course I mean that it the best way possible, as his songs are in the same vein of laid back chill music with soul. The music I have here ranges from the very catchy upbeat single “Sunshine”, to the slower melodic “Astair”, to the electric guitar and harp driven “Emergency Call”. Follow the link below to listen to the full concert Matt Costa - Boulder, CO - 05/29/08 1) Long Wait 2) Ballad Of Miss Kate 3) Vienna 4) Mr. Pitiful 5) Shimmering Field Seed 6) Sunshine 7) Astair 8) Miss Magnolia 9) Sweet Rose 10) Emergency Call Support the artists by buying music and watching them live!

Despite having an extraordinary set list for you on this episode the mood is somber. Like I’m sure many of you, I was shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Dave Matthews Band sax player Leroi Moore. Speaking as a huge fan his loss is already sinking in but a deepest sympathy goes out to Leroi’s close friends and family. In addition to being a very gifted musician, every story that I have heard about his life off stage portrayed him as an all around great person.
The music for this show is a compilation of some of my favorite Leroi moments from past DMB concerts. These songs together celebrate a life that was cut too short but sweet for certain. 1) Bartender (07/31/05) 2) Best of What's Around (09/04/04) 3) #34 (10/02/07) 4) What Would You Say (12/10/05) 5) Seek Up (10/05/04) 6) #41 (12/10/05) 7) Grey Street (08/08/03) 8) Proudest Monkey (07/17/99) 9) Say Goodbye (03/23/07) 10) Don't Drink the Water (10/02/07) 11) Crush (06/07/08) 12) Typical Situation (09/04/04) 13) Pay For What You Get (06/07/08) 14) Spoon (09/14/03) 15) All Along the Watchtower (08/26/07) 16) Kit Kat Jam (06/29/03) 17) So Much To Say (06/21/08) 18) Anyone Seen the Bridge (06/21/08) 19) Too Much (06/21/08) 20) Long Black Veil (09/08/02) 21) Stay (10/05/04) 22) Leroi Intro (07/11/00) 23) Pantala Naga Pampa (07/11/00) 24) Rapunzel (07/11/00) 25) Ants Marching (04/21/01) If you enjoyed this podcast consider making a donation to the LeRoi Moore Charity Fund, thank you. |

The LMP returns with another festival concert, this time from last years moe.down. The lineup for moe.down 8 was stellar and included the up and coming singer/songwriter Amos Lee. I’m not as familiar with his music as some of the other bands that I have featured so I’m going to keep this intro fairly short. I would describe his music as a hybrid of folk and soul with Norah Jones coming to mind with a few of his songs.
The live performance of his songs came across very well and it sounded like the crowd was digging it even if the style of music different from that of the festival’s founding fathers. The band also seemed to have a lot of fun, even pulling a Rick Roll on the crowd with a medley including Rick Astley’s 80s pop hit. The music for this episode comes once again from Bonnaroo 2008 which was just too jam packed with great performances to be contained in one episode. This time I will be playing songs from the Saturday night headliner concert featuring Pearl Jam in their Bonnaroo debut.
There is no doubt that Pearl Jam was more than due to join the amazing group of musicians that have played Bonnaroo. Not only are they a great band but they have also been a champion of the live music scene since their early days. Back in 1994 they went head to head against the mighty Ticketmaster in response to inflated service charges. In addition to this they have provided their fans with a huge collection of live music content through the Pearl Jam Official Bootlegs series. These bootlegs have captured almost every single show the band has played since 2000. The recording that I will be playing is not the official bootleg but Pearl Jam’s taping policy is kind enough to allow for unofficial recordings as well. Interesting to note on this recording is that taper makes note that some of his equipment was confiscated at a Doobie Brothers show and had to borrow gear from other tapers at Bonnaroo. That pretty much sums up the scene at Bonnaroo, great music and great people coming together. I hope you enjoy the tunes. It seems to be festival season here at the LMP with back to back shows featuring 2008 music festivals. For this episode I will be playing music from the quaint little music and arts festival known as Bonnaroo. As always the lineup this year was stacked which made it pretty difficult to pick just one. However, I recently downloaded a show that distinguished itself from the pack, Mark Lynn's taping of My Morning Jacket.
Up to this point I hadn't heard very much of their music, but I've been seeing a lot of buzz about them in the live music blogosphere. I especially had heard good things about their Bonnaroo set and had to check it out for myself. The first thing that I noticed about this set was the length, just shy of 4 hours. To entertain a crowd for that long you need to bring your A game and they definitely did that. Powerful musical performances, a great selection of covers, and guest appearances by Kirk Hammett of Metallica and comedian Zach Galifianakis all added up to one unforgetable show. The sound quality of the taping was also stellar which is made even more impression when you consider that it was raining for part of the set. Welcome to episode #28 where I am pleased to bring you a band that I wasn't sure I'd ever see on the LMP. When I saw that Cake was in the line-up for this year's Wakarusa festival I hoped there might be a chance that a taper would get their set. Fortunately for me Brian Price was able to pull off a great sounding recording and especially fortunate since I missed out on Wakarusa this year.
Cake's catchy guitar riffs, blazing trumpet solos, and off the wall lyrics all make them a great band, but I don't know if they've gotten a lot of live attention. I've seen them a couple times in the past and take if from me if you are fan you will enjoy the show. You can't really argue with the statistics, 9 out of 10 German tourist interviewed agree that their songs rock even though they miss the rising action a little bit. For those unfamiliar the Raconteurs they are a band of amazing musicians who’s lead singer also doubles as the front-man for a band called the White Stripes. On the music scene since 2005, I only recently became a big fan of theirs. A friend of mine lent me their latest album “Consolers of the Lonely” which I listened to almost exclusively for a solid couple of weeks. I followed that up with seeing their concert in Kansas City last April, which converted me into a devoted fan for life.
If you get a chance to get out and see them on their current tour please take it and you will not be disappointed. As you might remember from the last episode, this show marks the 1 year anniversary here at the LMP. It has been a year filled with some pretty amazing live performances and I'm hoping the following year will bring more of the same. Looking back on the last 12 months I am blown away at the number of listeners that we have received and also the positive comments I have gotten from some of you. Thank you to everyone for tuning in and for your support of the show.
On that note I'll begin the 2nd year of the live music with a download featuring two of my favorite musicians which were also featured in the very first LMP. This time however they will be joined by a few more friends. During the winter of 2003-2004 Dave Matthews and a few close pals including Tim Reynolds and Trey Anastatio combined musical forces for a limited stop tour in support of Dave's solo album "Some Devil". I was lucky enough to catch their stop in Chicago and to this day it still sits at the top of my all time concert list. In all fairness to other shows I've seen, this was really 3 or 4 shows in one. The concert began with Dave and Tim on acoustics, followed up by the full band, then by Dave and Trey on acoustics and finally an encore with the full band. The variety of songs and band's energy really stand out to me and you can tell my the crowd's energy that everyone else there was equally impressed by it. The songs I am featuring were included as part of a Best of Dave and Friends compilation I downloaded from dreamingtree.org. Thanks to Brian at antsmarching.org for assembling it! As this being the 25th episode it is somewhat of a milestone for the LMP. Being as such I wanted to make it a bit extra special, but then I realized that the next episode will mark the show's one year anniversary. So after much debate I decided that the best option was to make both episodes special, but I will save the party horns for next time.
The music for this episode comes from what is easily one of my favorite all time downloads and features singer/song-writer Ray Lamontagne. If this is your first encounter with Mr. Lamontagne's music be prepared to get some goosebumps. His unique singing style combines a husky whisper with powerful raw emotion that comes straight from his soul. Combine that with Ray's excellent song writing, a very talented ensemble of musicians, and near soundboard quality you have a truly remarkable recording. In the last episode I briefly commented on all of the festivals that are in store for this summer. However, some festivals don't bother waiting until the busy season and get things started off early. One of the first major US music festivals for the last 20 years has been South by Southwest held in Austin, TX. There were a ton of great bands that played there this year so it was a bit difficult picking just one. I ended up deciding on the North Mississippi Allstars who's musical style I believe represents this southernly located festival. If you'd like to find other audience recordings from this year's SXSW check out the nearly full list over at largeheartedboy.com:

Is it just me or has there been an explosion of new music festivals in recent years? If you don't believe me take journey over to the Live Music Blog and search for the word "festival". The nice thing about all of these new festivals is that no matter where you live you are probably within driving distance to one. Currently I'm making plans with some friends to head over to Wakarusa which will once again be held in Lawrence, KS.
The appeals of festivals are many but one big draw is that you get to see a lot of your favorite bands in one trip and also get exposure to new bands that you might not otherwise have seen live. From a live music taping perspective an additional benefit of the festival scene is that the taping policy of the festival will often times trump that of each band or record label. The result is that live recordings of bands that don't usually taped get injected into the taping community. The band I am featuring in this episode is one such example. Despite very few live recordings in circulation, here is Neil Young and Crazy Horse live from Bonnaroo 2003. It is time once again for a LMP PSA. If you are new to the live music downloading scene and need help with downloading and converting different file formats check out the Getting Started link in the upper left part of the page. I’d also be happy to answer any questions via "email" <livemusicpodcast at gmail dot com >.
The band leader from this episode has been included on more episodes of the LMP than any other but this will be the first time she and her band get the stage all to themselves. The first sighting appeared on Episode 14 when Grace Potter joined Gov’t Mule for amazing renditions of Emmy Lou Harris’ Angel Band followed by the Fleetwood Mac classic Gold Dust Woman. If you haven’t heard that episode yet, Grace Potter more than holds her own on both songs which is quite a feat considering the legendary singers being covered. The second appearance came on Episode 16 which featured Grace Potter with her bandmates the Nocturnals during Warren Haynes 19th Annual X-Mas Jam. For this episode they laid down a jammed out version of their song ‘Watching You’ which is most likely responsible for them entering my download radar. After hearing that show I picked up several more really good recordings but held off on pulling the trigger on a podcast until I found just the right one show. I’m really glad that I did wait because "the one" turned out to be recorded last month and truly blew me away. Here is Grace Potter and the Nocturnals from their February 21st concert in New York City. If you like Grace Potter's style of music you might also enjoy some of the music featured on Honest Tunes Radio. I've been listening to the podcast for a while now and dig their mix of live tunes and in studio interviews with some great bands from the jam and roots scene. The featured concert for this episode brings a slightly heavier tone to the LMP than my previous shows. Last year marked the return of a one of the greatest bands in the alternative rock scene. On May 22nd, 2007 the Smashing Pumpkins returned to a stage in Paris after more than a six year hiatus. Original band members Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlain proved throughout that 2007 tour that they still could rock a live show just as they had in their earlier days.
The concert that I selected from the year of the Pumpkin's reunion was taped in Normal, Illinois on October 4th. Part of the reason I liked this recording was the great sound quality but also because of it's proximity to the Pumpkin's old stomping grounds in Chicago. Due to it's location and the time of year, in the recording you can hear the crowd chanting in support of the Chicago Cubs. It turns out that they were playing game 2 of the National League Divisional playoffs that same night which would make a very difficult decision for any fan of the band and the team. Also, a quick warning to St Louis Cardinal fans out there that if you decide to listen to the full concert Billy Corgan has a few unkind words to say about your team. I choose to stay neutral on this and leave this part out of the podcast but the rest of the show is a solid listen no matter which team you root for. This episode features music by former Soul Coughing front man Mike Doughty during his 2000 solo tour. I'm a pretty big fan of Mr. Doughty but I especially enjoyed this set because it is one of the most intimate recordings that I have listened to. In a large part this is due to the venue being the Maintenance Shop in Ames, IA. I went to college in Ames and the M-Shop, as it is known, seats only a couple hundred people. For a personal concert setting this is great but only as long as you get tickets before they sell out. I unfortunately found this out the hard way when Jack Johnson sold it out in under 10 minutes.
Another reason for it's intimacy is that following almost every song, Doughty is interacting with the crowd in some way. While this might not be for everyone I think it is something that he really excels at and gives you the feeling of experiencing the concert in person. There has been a few times where I have heard a new artist and immediately wanted to go see them live. Then shortly later I find out that I had missed the tour by a couple weeks. Well this happened about a year ago when a friend told me about someone he had been listening to named Regina Spektor.
Fortunately I was able to make up for my lateness to Regina's music by seeing her performance at the Uptown theater in Kansas City last November. Her singing was absolutely amazing and lived up to everything that I had been hoping for the entire year of waiting. I had expected her vocal range to blow me away so that was no surprise, but what amazed me was how she pulls off the entire show solo. Her talents alternate between grand piano, electric guitar, percussion, and then percussion while playing the piano. I wouldn't be surprised if she plays piano and guitar during the next show I see. Her lyrics are also very clever and sometimes quite funny. The concert that I am featuring was from the same tour as the one I missed and is an excellent sounding recording. I am very thankful to the audience in San Francisco who are for the most part unnoticeable during the songs, but definitely let Regina hear it in between. All concerts are not the same in this respect and for the style of music that Regina plays a mellow crow really makes the concert more enjoyable for everyone. I am prefacing this episode with a shout out to a fellow blogger that has graciously returned from a short hiatus for part of last year. Justin Ward, who heads up livemusicblog.com, runs one of the most popular and informative blogs about the live music scene. His posts cover a wide range of topics including early announcements of festival lineups, concert reviews, and even advice on how to survive a 3-4 day music festival. In addition to all of this the Live Music Blog also has a corresponding podcast featuring some great live recordings which fans of this podcast will most likely enjoy. That's the end of the plug so I hope you'll check this site out if you haven't already.
Moving on to the featured concert for this episode is one that I have eagerly been anticipating putting together ever since starting this podcast. The featured concert is from Will Hoge's February 3rd, 2007 performance in Boulder, CO. I first heard about Will Hoge through a taper in the KC area who at the time was moving to Denver and was going to see him in KC before he left. Ironically enough he was the one who recorded the show in Boulder, so thanks goes out to Ed for sharing this awesome concert. If you have never heard of Will Hoge's music before it's has a ton of energy, but at the same time a very bluesy soulful sound. The Black Crowes are a pretty good comparison, but Mr. Hoge definitely has a unique sound that is his own. I didn't have to listen to very many of their songs before I added them to my must see list, so hopefully you will have the same experience with them that I did. I might be a couple days late but I still want to wish everyone out there a very happy New Year! I also want to thank you for listening in 2007 and let you know that I look forward to another year of great live music. I'm not planning on making any major changes in 2008 just yet, but that should be good news if you have enjoyed the show thus far.
I'm kicking off the new year with one of my all time favorite bands to watch live. The first time I saw Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals was in the summer of 2003 and ever since I have tried my best not to miss a show. I'm actually kind of surprised that I waited this long to feature one of their concerts, but sadly their live recordings are a somewhat rare occurrence. This band is easily one of the most powerful live acts around and on top of that they have produced some wonderful CDs with a lot of commercial success as well. Having said that, if you have heard songs off their CDs but not performed live I really believe this band take on a completely new form when they get on stage. Hopefully this podcast will give you a glimpse at what they do live, but it really needs to be seen to be fully appreciated. Please enjoy a sampling from their March 01, 2001 performance recorded in Athens, GA. Song listing

This episode I am featuring a very special Christmas edition of the podcast. Unfortunately I was unable to find any solid recordings of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, but I think what I have will be equally as festive. This episode features music coming from Warren Haynes' 19th Annual X-Mas Jam in Asheville, North Carolina.
The X-Mas Jam began on December 29th, 1989 as a way to bring together local musicians to play once a year for charity. This tradition has continued ever since and this year's iteration once again brings great musicians together to benefit the Asheville chapter of Habitat for Humanity. The jam may have started with local musicans but this year's lineup featured some big name bands including Jackson Browne, G. Love, Bruce Hornsby, Stockholm Syndrome, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, Peter Frampton, and of course Warren Haynes and Gov't Mule. In case you were hoping for some traditional Christmas songs this set will probably let you down, fortunately for you the Neil Diamond Christmas Album is available at amazon.com. Instead, this concert features some very talented musicians and some wicked jams...feel free to enjoy it with a glass of eggnog though. Looking back on the past 14 episodes there is one general theme that comes to mind and that is Sausage Fest. The LMP has been severely lacking in female musicians, so far there has been half of Rodrigo y Gabriela and a few female guest performers here and there. That all changes with this episode where I will be featuring singer/songwriter Tristan Prettyman.
I often refer to Tristan's music as a female version of Jack Johnson. I'm not sure if this is due to the relaxing acoustic melodies that they both share or that Tristan also grew up as a competitive surfer. Regardless, they are two of my favorite musicians to listen to when I want to kick back and relax. Tristan's live shows are primarily a solo affair, but this concert also features Jen Lowe on percussion which really helps fill out her songs. This concert was taped at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City on February 05, 2006. Thanks goes out to Christopher Jones for recording it. If you have been listening to the Live Music Podcast for a while this is probably already apparent, but I try to mix up the musical styles quite a bit. Last episode featured the electronic sounds of Daft Punk and this time I am featuring the bluesy jam band Gov't Mule.
Known by some as the Mule, this band has been together since the mid nineties and has built up a very loyal fan base. Musically their songs aren't a great fit for most radio stations so they remain relatively unknown to the majority despite their immense amounts of talent. The concert I am featuring was played at the Voodoo Lounge in Kansas City on November 1st of this year. I almost got tickets to this and after listening to the recording I really am kicking myself for not going. Fortunately for me the recording is absolutely flawless and props go out to the mystery taper who posted it on bt.etree.org. The music for this episode comes from this year's Vegoose festival held in Las Vegas. For the past 3 years the same crew that puts on Bonnaroo Festival has been throwing a Halloween music and arts festival of the same vein, minus the camping. I've never been to it personally but each year I try to download some of the sets that were fortunate enough to be taped (LMP Fact: the first episode featuring Dave Matthews and Tim Reyonlds was from Vegoose 2006!).
This year I was pleasantly surprised to find Daft Punk's Vegoose performance hosted on bt.etree.org. If you are a fan of electronic or house music you've probably heard of them, but recently they made a huge jump into the mainstream music scene when Kayne West sampled their track on his song "Stronger". The video for "Stronger" also features an homage to the band. For the past decade most if not all of Daft Punk's public performances and interviews have been held with them in robot suits which are similar to the ones piloting the spacecraft in Kayne's the video. I was not aware of this until putting together this podcast, Daft Punk will be releasing a new live album titled Alive 2007 on December 4th, 2007. So if you enjoyed the Vegoose show I expect the live album to be very similar since it will contain the duo's performance in Paris from their Alive 2007 tour. U2 is one of those bands that really doesn't require much of an introduction, but I just have a couple things to say about my selection for Episode 12. This concert took place during the beginning of U2's Joshua Tree tour which coincided with the release of probably their most legendary CD.
With the worldwide success of the CD and tour, U2 was catapulted from mere super band to mega band status and have only continued upward since. This recording is easily one of the best sounding that I have heard and the set list covers many of their biggest hits during that period. While there is nothing like seeing a U2 performance live, here is a recording that gives you the next best thing without having to stand in line for hours to get tickets. Song listing

Episode #11 of the Live Music Podcast brings another unique style of music somewhat like the last episode. In this episode I am featuring a band called Rodrigo y Gabriela made up of Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero. This duo's musical style is something of a combination of mariachi and heavy metal, which might make them the only band on the planet to do so. All of their songs are strictly acoustic and instrumental, played on a pair of classical guitars. Amazingly they are able to play in such a way that you would swear that there is someone else playing percussion instruments with them. Regardless of how you describe their style I find Rodrigo y Gabriela's music very energetic and uplifting, the musical equivalent to a box of Red Bull.

The 10th Episode of the Live Music Podcast is here and with it comes a genre of music that has been missing from previous episodes. The genre I am talking about is Southern Rock and the band is the Black Crowes. The show that I will be playing comes from Red Rocks Amphitheater near Denver, CO and was recorded September 9th, 2007. I've heard a few Crowes concerts from this year's tour but this one really jumped out at me. The sound quality, cool location, and the addition of North Mississippi Allstars frontman Luther Dickenson make this a very memorable recording. The only thing that could have made it better for me would be adding "Hard to Handle" to the set list, but it's pretty tough to complain with all the other great tracks.

The ninth installment of the live music podcast brings in one of my favorite bands of all time, the Dave Matthews Band. For a live music lover this band truly caters to you. They have been touring yearly since the early 90s and always bring an A+ performance to each show.
In Episode 8 I mentioned that this would be a special edition and the reason for that is that I am playing songs from 3 concerts instead of the usual. Since 2000 DMB has been playing a 3 night set at the Gorge Amphitheater in Washington state.
The Gorge is truly one of the DMB holy sites (including Red Rocks) that die hard Dave fans will travel hundreds of miles to go watch them play. Dave and the boys always give the fans an extra special performance when they play there. Not only do the biggest fans attend this show but also some of the best tapers. I have heard enough great Mike Vernal recordings that I keep an eye out for his name in the set details. Once again he delivers a spot on recording almost equal to the officially release Live at the Gorge CD that was from their 2002 tour. Welcome once again to the Live Music Podcast episode #8 (the Ocho). Technical difficulties delayed the release of this episode but hopefully it will be worth the wait. For this episode I am featuring Todd Snider, who is a fantastic singer/songwriter out of Nashville. Mr. Snider's style of music doesn't make the radio waves very often, but in my humble opinion he is at the top of the food chain for folk singers. His live performances are chalked full of some great story telling both in the songs and between them. He also tackles song themes that you won't find on the latest bubblegum popstar's CD. Another interesting note about Todd Snider is that he plays his shows with bare feet (it doesn't get much more folk than that). I'm not sure if you will be able to notice the lack of shoes on this performance from September 17, 2006 but at least it sounds really good.

So I'm back from vacation and am very excited to post episode #7 of the LMP featuring G. Love and Special Sauce. This concert was recorded at the House of Blues in San Diego, January 31, 2007 by way of the sound board and as you might expect it is very high quality. If you are new to G. Love, his style crosses genres all the way from blues to hip hop, but there really isn't a single definition for it. This recording really stood out to me because of the great sound and also the guest tracks featuring San Diego natives Slightly Stoopid and Tristan Prettyman.

Episode #6 of the LMP features Jason Mraz and company from their 2006 fall tour. If you've never heard Mr. A-Z live you will be in for a pleasant treat. This show, at least, is a more stripped down version of his songs than you might hear on the radio (and it works very well). Jason's voice really shines when you pair it up with some acoustic guitars and a conga drum. This concert also features the talents of another singer/songwriter, Raul Midon, whose voice really matches up well with Jason's. If you want to hear a good example of this check out Midon's song Keep on Hoping which can be downloaded on Itunes here .
Jason and his band also know how to have a good time on stage and the crowd that night was more than willing to follow along. At one point in the concert they stop the music to play something called the Song Game. In the Song Game, Jason asks the audience to come up with several phrases and he then uses those to spontaneously create a song. I didn't include this in the podcast because it would take up too much time but it is definitely worth downloading the full show to listen to it. I'll stop my rambling about this one and let you form your own opinion about it. Hope you enjoy! Taper: Timothy Brown Song listing

I intentionally left off one of the concerts from Bonnaroo on my last post since I absolutely had to feature it in my next podcast episode. Every year at Bonnnaroo there has been a Superjam where artists from different bands and styles of music come together. It really symbolizes the diverse array of styles on display at Bonnaroo and always ends up being an awesome show. It goes to show you that truly great musicians can adapt to play with just about anyone and produce great sounding music.
My mouth salivated when I saw the lineup for this year's Superjam: on lead guitar and vocals Ben Harper, on drums ?uestlove of the Roots, and on bass the legendary John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin. This ensemble truly lived up to the name of Superjam. The week after Bonnaroo I scoured the net and almost had given up hope on finding this one. Last week, however, I found a link on bt.etree.org to download my holy grail of tapings. After listening to it several times since then I can assure you that it definitely lived up to my hype and was worth the effort. As you might expect they cover a lot of Zeppelin and throw in quite a few extended jams. This concert is in an early lead for taping of the year for me, so give it a listen and see if you agree. I almost hate to admit it, but Episode #4 features a band that I have only been listening to fairly recently. The reason I say that is that the John Butler Trio really should have been in my CD player a while ago considering their style matches so close to bands like Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, and G Love and Special Sauce which I am huge fans of. Another reason that they should have been in my CD player is that they are really damn good.
I was fortune enough to see these guys live at Wakarusa this year and really got to see an excellent performance. This Australian trio really has a good variety of songs to get your toes tapping. I especially enjoy their up tempo song Funky Tonight which is, as the name suggests, quite funky. Song listing

Episode #3 brings one of my favorite artists of all time to the Live Music Podcast, Jack Johnson. This recording comes all the way from Le Zenith in Paris, France and sounds just as good or better than ones I've heard in the states. If you aren't a big fan of crowd noise you might notice a lot of clapping and singing along, but on this one it really adds to energy rather than being a distraction. Another thing that makes this concert special is the addition of several members from ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra) sitting in with the band. Jack's songs really come alive with a little help from a piano, harmonica, and even accordion. Plus they mix in several very interested cover songs to keep you on your tows. Enjoy the show!

Episode #2 of the Live Music Podcast features a recent concert from Robert Randolph and the Family Band. I had the opportunity to see this one live and I can tell you that this was an awesome show from the moment they took the stage to the end of the encore. I met up with one of the tapers before the show and was pleasantly surprised when I downloaded it from archive.org.

The first episode of the Live Music Podcast features one of my favorite downloads of 2006, Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. This is an outstanding recording of an equally great performance. Even if you are not a fan of their music individually, you have to appreciate the energy that occurs between these two when they jam together. If you are already a fan you will probably enjoy versions of some of the newer Dave Matthews Band songs.
